When Gift Cards are Acceptable..

It’s hard to tell when it’s acceptable to send a gift card, and when it’s not. While cards aren’t the most personal gift, sometimes it’s just too hard to find a gift that suits the person you’re buying for. And that’s without considering the budget you have available! There are some situations when buying a gift card will be seen as acceptable, and other times when it should be avoided.

DO Send a gift card:

To congratulate someone you aren’t extremely close with on a new job, graduation, new baby, marriage, etc.
To send condolences for someone dealing with a death in the family (the death of someone you weren’t close with)
To say you’re sorry if you feel that you were in the wrong
To wish someone well when they aren’t well

DON’T Send a gift card:

To wish your parents a happy birthday/mother’s day/father’s day when you live in the same geographic area
To say you’re sorry that someone lost their job (quite the rude reminder)
After you’ve forgotten your significant other’s birthday

If sending a gift card, be sure to at least include a personal message. Most people find cards to be extremely impersonal, and if you don’t even bother to put in a personal message, it seems you didn’t care enough to even think of something to say yourself to the person.
