Gift Wrap - Decorative Envelope

This simple, yet decorative envelope is not only easy to make, but it will also help give your gift a distinctive edge.

envelope templateThe best material for this project is a stiff paper - whether it's card stock, cardboard, or a patterened sheet to make it a bit fancier.

Use the decorative envelope pattern to the left (or, a downloadable version can be found here); each square should measure 0.5"x0.5" at this size, so the finished gift envelope will measure to be approximately 3" wide by 4" tall. For a larger decorative envelope, you can easily make the pattern bigger by transfering it on to a grid with squares 1"x1".

  1. Cut out the decorative envelope pattern, and trace it onto the paper that you are going to be using for your gift box. Cut the envelope out around the solid lines. Where there are dotted lines, score the paper on the wrong side of the envelope. (This helps it to fold easier!)
  2. Put glue or double-sided tape on the wrong side of the side overlap. Fold up the envelope, securing the side overlaps on top of the correct pannels of the envelope.
  3. Push the flaps in at the top and the bottom of the envelope, and decorate freely.

Those three simple steps are the basic steps on how to make a decorative envelope. Once you have mastered these three steps, you can always expand on these three steps and make as elaborate an envelope as you could desire!
