Gift Wrap - Gift Cone

This simple, yet decorative gift cone is ideal for those gifts that aren't suited to a box or envelope.

gift cone templateThe best material for this project is a stiff paper - whether it's card stock, cardboard, or a patterened sheet to make it a bit fancier. You may also want tissue paper for the inside, and ribbon or other decorative pieces for the outside.

Use the gift cone pattern to the left (or, a downloadable version can be found here); each square should measure 0.5"x0.5" at this size, so the finished gift envelope will measure to be approximately 5" tall. For a larger decorative envelope, you can easily make the pattern bigger by transfering it on to a grid with squares 1"x1".

  1. Cut out the decorative envelope pattern, and trace it onto the paper that you are going to be using for your gift cone. Cut the shape out around the solid lines. Along the arc of the shape, you can use pinking shears to create a serrated edge.
  2. Put glue or double-sided tape on the wrong side of one of the edges of the cone. Roll it as tightly or as loosely as desired.
  3. Decorate as you choose.

Those three simple steps are the basic steps on how to make a gift cone. Once you have mastered these three steps, you can always expand on these three steps and make as elaborate a gift cone as you could desire!
