Gift Wrap - How to Make An Envelope

This envelope is probably one of the easiest ways to create your own original gift wrap, and it is perfect for holding a card to accompany your gift, or even just to jazz up a gift certificate. We can show you how to make an envelope in three easy steps!

envelope templateThe best material for this project is a stiff paper - whether it's card stock, cardboard, or a patterened scrapbook sheet to make it a bit fancier.

Use the pattern provided to the left (or, a downloadable version can be found here); each square should measure 0.5"x0.5" at this size, so the finished square envelope will measure to be 3.5" wide by 2.25" tall. For a larger envelope, you can easily make the pattern bigger by creating it on a grid with squares 1"x1".

  1. Cut out the envelope pattern, and trace it onto the paper that you are going to be using for your envelope. Cut the envelope out around the solid lines. Where there are dotted lines, score the paper on the wrong side of the envelope. (This helps it to fold easier!)
  2. Fold up the envelope, and punch out the holes in the flap using a hole punch. If you have used a thiner, slightly transparent paper, you can paste a thicker card stock on the back flaps of the envelope.
  3. Thread string, twine, or other material through the holes and around the envelope in order to keep it closed. You can make this as decorative or simples as you wish!

Those three simple steps are the basic steps on how to make an envelope. Once you have mastered these three steps, you can always expand on these three steps and make as elaborate an envelope as you could desire!
